Getting Excited for Fall at Grace UMC!

I know a lot of people really dearly love summer. But for me the most exciting time is fall!

While I enjoy getting in a little summer vacation I really get excited when we starting gearing up again for fall activities at church. During the summer I miss the Chancel Choir and our Sunday morning praise group “Seeds of Grace.” I miss all the people who are traveling during the summer. I miss all the buzz on campus at Morningside College next door. Summer is just a little bit too quiet for me. But now fall is here and a lot of exciting things are happening!

Soon our full music program at Grace will be back in full swing. We will be starting Sunday School for children and Bible Study on Sunday morning for adults on September 20th. We will start new small group opportunities and studies this year as part of our small group ministers program. We are also going to try a new way of doing “Grace Nights” our regular Wednesday night program.

Also Grace is beginning and new fun and exciting partnership with Morningside College’s Campus Ministry through Chaplain Ryan Russell with our Sunday night Celebration Worship. We are meeting in the gathering area in front of the sanctuary for a relaxed and casual service of contemporary worship with the Celebration Band, the study of the scriptures and the Sacrament of Holy Communion each Sunday. I’m really excited about this new opportunity for worship and connection with our partners at Morningside College!

This fall I’m will again be teaching Christian Ethics at Morningside on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I’m looking forward to getting to know another group of students at Morningside and hear their ideas and insights about the pressing ethical issues of the day and hopefully share with them ways that they can form and inform their own ethical understanding and values.

Fall also brings the start of confirmation classes which will again meet on Sunday’s following worship at 11:30a with our confirmands twice each month. It was a blast last year to confirm ten young people into the professing membership of the Church! I’m sure we will have a good group of 7th and 8th graders again this year.

This fall I also will have the blessing of performing weddings for couples who have been in premarital counseling with me this summer. I’m looking forward to being a part of helping them to formalize the commitment they are already making to each other. I’m also excited about an upcoming baptism that a family and I were planning just this morning.

If you live in the Sioux City area and are looking for an exciting community of faith, I want to invite you to come check out Grace UMC on the corner of Morningside Ave. and Garretson Ave. next to the campus of Morningside College. There is a lot happening at Grace this fall and we’d love you to be a part of it!
